Chinese Herbal Treatment for Eczema
I had developed eczema on my eyelids, cheeks, neck and hands, which had erupted leaving me irritable and extremely stressed. The backs of my hands and my fingers were covered in weeping, watery, itchy blisters with dry cracked skin, which often bled.
Shulan Tang, whose reputation for the healing of eczema was strong and reliable, was recommended to me by my Reiki / Reflexology therapist.
Shulan suggested that as part of the treatment of my eczema, I must completely change my eating behaviour. I began a dairy free diet, excluding wine, chocolate, lamb, peppers, onions, garlic, ginger and spicy food. She gave me a prescription of dried Chinese herbs to boil up and drink three times a day. As my eczema condition began to improve, my prescription was changed to a powder which was mixed with water.
Soon my skin began to heal and my general health condition improved immensely. The symptoms which had been so distressing have now subsided, and to my great delight, the skin on my hands has healed!
I am most grateful to Shulan Tang and all her staff who have also played a part in supporting my journey to better health.

Increased Energy & Emotional Balance
I have been having regular acupuncture treatment with Shulan, for several years now, and it has sustained me through a time of great change in my life.
In this time, I left an unhappy marriage, and went out as a single parent with my daughter - now 12; set up an independent theatre company; and continued working as a social worker, with adults, sometimes in highly stressful situations.
Just having a consultation with Shulan is a reassuring and healing experience. She is a thoroughly empathic and intuitive practitioner of acupuncture and TCM.
I go to Shulan when I have acute health problems - those which are common amongst us multi-tasking, juggling women - such as back pain; viruses; stress headaches; and lack of energy. And her skilled acupuncture combined with TCM provide instant relief; and her advice about how much more treatment is needed afterwards, means that I then have a short course, which usually not only heals the acute condition, but has the added bonus of rebalancing my energy and making me feel whole again.
Sometimes I point to the centre of my stomach and say to Shulan ‘It’s here where I really feel things’, and she tells me that this is my ‘chi’ – my core source of energy. Shulan’s skilled help in enabling me to release this energy has enabled me to develop as a writer, actor and latterly in singing in public, with ease and confidence.
In terms of more chronic conditions – the grief and loss caused by divorce can be overwhelming, but Shulan's treatment enabled me to work through this, and emerge stronger, tougher and able to take on the next stage of my life.
Overall, I would say the benefits of Shulan’s acupuncture and TCM are: increased energy; significantly less stress; emotional and spiritual balance; and a feeling of wholeness and also lightness.
Shulan has a theory called ‘Autumn Flower Syndrome’ which is about how women can be assisted in managing change in their lives – not just menopausal type change, but the many transitions that women have to go through in terms of relationships; having children; their economic independence; using their creativity etc.
Speaking personally, I am rather a late bloomer, but Shulan has helped me feel that at this stage of my life, I am blooming with abundance and I thank her so much for this.
She is a beautiful woman and a highly skilled Professor of TCM and acupuncture.

I had incurred serious injuries at work and over several years I had been prescribed pain killers and steroid injections plus physiotherapy and several operations, none of which seemed to improve my condition for any length of time.
I hobbled about like an old lady, my joint twisted and painful. My husband had to help me with everyday personal tasks such as cleaning my teeth. The painting and drawing which was my first love became but a memory.
My husband decided to take me to the warmth of Florida and we flew to Sarasota where, after a few weeks we were recommended by three different people to visit Dr Xu, a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
We made an appointment to see him a few days before we left for home. He suggested that I continue treatment back in England with a colleague of his - Shulan Tang. 'She's a very clever woman,' he said. On returning home we located Shulan Tang and made an appointment to visit her at her clinic in Manchester
At my first visit and few subsequent visits, I was in so much pain and my hands were so twisted that Shulan had to help me undress for the acupuncture, as zips and buttons defeated me. Now, two years on, I am again able to draw and paint. I was even able to hold an exhibition this summer and I also am also able to sell through galleries in Yorkshire. I can walk easily, dance, cook and enjoy my life to the full.
Thank you so much, Shulan.

I think Tuina is a useful therapy to learn, similar to western remedial/ clinical massage but with a stronger emphasis on preserving the therapists Qi and health. Prior to learning Tuina I was already a busy medical massage therapist but now I have changed my techniques a lot and am more aware of not exhausting myself.
The shortness of the course suited me having already got qualifications & experience in TCM acupuncture & western medical massage. I found that the course contained as much material as was possible in a six-session course, I found that it progressed and built on what had been taught in previous weeks so that by the end we would feel competent to give a reasonably good Tuina massage. We had plenty of time and individual tuition to repeat whatever techniques we were unsure of until where we happy with it. I found that the 1st week was confusing, frustrating & not organised enough but that was rectified after. Maybe with the next group everything should be planned from the 1st day. I am happy with what I’ve learnt and feel that the small groups give plenty of one to one time and that the teaching style gave an authentic learning experience. I feel that the course has given good value & I would recommend the course to other students.
