Early Life & Education in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Shulan Traditional Chinese Medicine CollegeProfessor Shulan Tang grew up in the Chinese countryside. From a young age she was interested in growing plants and flowers and nurtured her own flowerbed. As she grew up, her hobby developed into a serious interest in the healing properties of plants and herbs. Shulan’s father encouraged her to develop her interest professionally and at the age of 16 she was accepted into the prestigious Nanjing TCM University. After 5 years of study at the Nanjing TCM University, Shulan qualified to study for her Master’s degree in Chinese Herbal Prescription at China’s premier TCM University of Beijing.

Studying Traditional Chinese Medicine Under a Master

At Beijing TCM University, Shulan had the great fortune to be supervised by one of the most respected Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors in China, Professor Mianzhi Wang. Professor Wang is the 19th generation of Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners in his family, his grandfather was the emperor’s TCM doctor in the Quing Dynasty. Says Shulan “Studying under Professor Wang was a great privilege and contributed so much to my deeper understanding of Chinese Medicine. His mantra was – Yi Zhe, Yi Ye – which translates to  - A good doctor not only remembers from books, he must be able to think and understand.”
On receiving her Master’s degree, Professor Tang returned to South East University in Nanjing, where she progressed to the position of Head Physician.

Settled in Manchester

In 1991, Shulan made the decision to re-locate to England. She spent some time working in TCM in several locations, eventually settling in Manchester.

Says Shulan, “I practiced Traditional Chinese Medicine in several cities in the UK, including London. I enjoyed the difference in the approach of the British patients towards me as a TCM doctor. In China, patients expect to be treated by a wise old man with a long grey beard. In England, I found that people have more respect for my skills and knowledge and this has in turn helped me to develop faster, as a TCM practitioner and as a person.
I am very happy here in Manchester. In comparison with some other cities I find Manchester calmer. Cities such as London are very busy and can be stressful. I also find the people in Manchester to be warm and hospitable.”
